This week my Electrical I class is bending conduit. I was well prepared for the presentation part of the class and I think I did a good job answering students questions. It was very hard explaining the various charts but I kept the focus on why it was important to learn them. These charts provides the electrician with measurements necessary to make correct bends. To make a long story short, when I did my demonstration, I had the students to pick which conduit bends they wanted me to make and I made them. I calculated my measurements with various measurements from several charts and made the bend. Some bends are very hard to come out right on the first try. All my bends came out prefect the first time. I think this created some competition because the students worked very hard to make their bends come out right the first time. I never seen students apply this type of effort on any task. Usually students become frustrated when charts and math is involved in a task.
I'm very proud of this instruction because it was the most productive and students applied effort. I hope this will carry over into all the other tasks and the students will keep the same enthusiasim.
